On the Democratic side, Alex Sink, the former state Chief Financial Officer, was the presumptive nominee early on, with the Democrats clearing the field for her. The GOP however, had three candidates in the primary, lobbyist David Jolly, state Rep. Kathleen Peters and retired Marine Reserve Brig. Gen. Mark Bircher. Jolly was the frontrunner going into the election and will now face Sink in the general election on March 11.
Tuesday was the primary election for Florida’s 13th District. The late Rep. C.W. Bill Young (R), Florida’s longest serving Member of Congress, passed away in October after 22 terms. The race has been gaining attention nationwide, with both parties looking to the competitive 13th district election as a bellwether for the 2014 midterms.
